The eighty-acre Cheesman Park neighborhood located in Central Downtown Denver is one of Denver's oldest residential areas dating back to 1869. It is roughly bordered by Humboldt Street on the west, the Denver Botanic Gardens on the east, 13^th Avenue on the north, and 8^th Avenue on the south. The majority of the land was annexed by the city in 1883 and by the end of the 1880s the neighborhood was platted, but little development had occurred. Cheesman Park and the land that is now the Denver Botanic Gardens was given to the city for use as a cemetery in 1872 by a congressional grant and Congress further awarded a grant to permit its use as a park in 1893. The earlier burial ground was then removed.

By 1915, the neighborhood was almost totally developed primarily with large homes for the City’s wealthy business and professional people. Today, the Cheesman Park neighborhood includes the Wyman’s, Morgan’s Addition and Humboldt Island residential historic districts with varied architectural styles dating between the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s.

By the 1930s, the Cheesman Park neighborhood had become primarily an apartment district. The neighborhood population density of 12,000-people per square mile exceeds the city’s average density of under 4,000-people per square mile resulting from the concentration of mid-rise and high-rise residential buildings surrounding the park.

The park was named Cheesman Park in honor of Denver’s Walter Cheesman whose family donated the money for development of the pavilion on the eastern side of the park.

Tree-lined streets in a city-center location blending the old and the new best describes Cheesman Park. Culturally diverse, you will find cafes, boutiques, coffeehouses and restaurants close at hand. Nearby, the Denver Botanic Gardens hosts a variety of events through-out the year as well.
