Ira Boyd Humphreys open the first commercial airport in 1918 near the Stapleton neighborhood and founded the Curtiss-Humphreys Airplane Company in 1919. Ten-years later, the Denver Municipal Airport was opened nearby and renamed Stapleton Airfield in 1944 in honor of Denver mayor Benjamin Stapleton. Stapleton International Airport continued to expand and grow until air traffic demands exceed its capacity. In anticipation of this, the Denver International Airport was planned and developed. On a single day in 1995, Stapleton closed and DIA opened. Stapleton's entire airport infrastructure has been removed except for the control tower and a parking structure as a reminder of its past history.

The redevelopment of the 4,700-acre neighborhood of Stapleton began in 2001 with build-out projected to continue through 2020. Stapleton has been planned as a sustainable community offering an urban lifestyle integrated with eco-friendly energy-sparing technology.  

Public open-space and parks are inter-connected with trail ways friendly to pedestrian zero-carbon means of transportation. Centralized shopping districts are convenient to each of the residential neighborhoods within Stapleton.

It is not uncommon for Stapleton families to live, work and play in their neighborhood without having to drive their car!
