Due east of Downtown Denver’s Central Business District, you will find the neighborhood commonly called Uptown. In the 1880’s, it was referred to as “East Denver” since there wasn’t anything further east at the time. The City of Denver statistical planners call it North Capitol Hill on their maps. It is, after all, due north of Capitol Hill.

Uptown, when first developed in the 1880’s, was that of a residential area of “fine, stable prominent citizens”. Architectural styles included Queen Anne-houses with second-story balconies, Victorians, Denver Squares and brick bungalows. Most of the neighborhood was platted with tree-lined boulevards with sidewalks setback from the street.

Around the turn-of-the-century, Denver’s reputation as a wellness center began to grow by word of mouth. People sought the benefits of the region’s dry fresh mountain air for relief of respiratory ailments. Private hospitals and sanitariums were established on the eastern “edge” of the city. Today, the Uptown neighborhood is home to a complex of hospitals that includes St. Joseph's, Presbyterian/St. Luke's, and Kaiser Permanente near the intersection of 18th & Franklin Street. In addition, the area is home to related hospital supply and services businesses and doctor's offices. Total healthcare employment in the area exceeds 10,000-people.

With the area’s employment base and proximity to Downtown Denver, the Uptown neighborhood is enjoying redevelopment, restoration and gentrification. You will find top-rated restaurants, trendy breakfast cafes, off-beat coffee shops, and neighborhood stores. Nearby you will find the refurbished Fillmore Auditorium and the Ogden Theater hosting live entertainment. “Restaurant Row” on 17th Street is home to a concentration of eateries. Uptown has become an interesting mix of old and new.

A short distance to the west is Downtown Denver and beyond to the LoDo and Ballpark neighborhoods brimming with additional entertainment venues and restaurants. To the southwest you will find the Golden Triangle with its concentration of cultural and performing arts facilities. Due east is City Park, home to the Denver Zoo and Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

The Uptown neighborhood offers affordable housing alternatives in a central city location offering a contrast of the historic past with the modern present.
